Sinterklaas surprised us at the TOS HQ with Rotterdam cookies. For all seafarers at home: enjoy ‘pakjesavond’ or in English the ‘evening of presents’. Are you still at sea? Then join us in baking pepernoten, a typical Dutch Sinterklaas sweet! This recipe will be a piece of cake for the ship’s cook. And they taste great with a cup of tea or coffee.
INGREDIENTS: 70 PEPERNOTEN
- 250 g self-rising flour
- 125 g dark-brown pure cane sugar (NL: basterdsuiker)
- 4 tsp pumpkin-pie spice (NL: speculaaskruiden)
- dash of salt
- 100 g cold butter
- 6 tbsp milk
- These spiced cookies are ready in no time. Don’t forget to preheat the oven to 175 degrees.
What is Sinterklaas about?
On the 5th of December we celebrate Sinterklaas, a thoroughly Dutch family holiday. Children are treated to gifts and adults prepare surprises and compose humorous poems about each other. On this day in the Netherlands, we eat 9.4 million kilos of Sinterklaas sweets! 🙂
