‘I have really enjoyed being at sea for six years now. Four years ago, TOS matched me with a position as Engineer at Allseas, where I became an employee after just a few trips. Some projects were very memorable, such as the project just off the coast of Norway (from Nyhamna to a platform North of the Arctic Circle). During this time, we worked for longer periods with the same group of colleagues. We worked well together and there was a good atmosphere on board. For part of the trip, the sun didn’t even set. But when it did, we saw the Northern Lights. Very special!’ tells Kolijn Venema.
Sea2Shore: the personal approach at TOS
Kolijn: ‘At the beginning of this year, I made the decision to go ashore. I have known TOS since my student days. They were great in helping me with the transition to Allseas, so I contacted them now again. And now I work as a Service Coordinator at Wärtsilä. My experience with the service at TOS has been very positive: clear communication, very accessible and committed. TOS helped me to come up with possible job options. And also after I began working at Wärtsilä, TOS continued to be involved to know how I was doing and if I was settling into the position.
What is your added value as a former seafarer?
‘As Service Coordinator, I make use of my practical knowledge of marine diesel engines and propulsion while supervising maintenance projects. This appeals to me very much! This way, I can play an active role in shipping, and I’m really learning a lot now about project management. As a former seafarer, I have a good idea about what maintenance projects entail, which problems can come up and how to handle them when they do. My background is not a requirement for the position of Service Coordinator, but it certainly has added value. This is something I hear quite often from colleagues and clients,’ explains Kolijn.
Personal growth
Kolijn: ‘Wärtsilä offers plenty of opportunities for professional and personal growth. The first period was focused on getting settled and becoming familiar with the company. In the coming period, I will sit with the manager to find out more about the development possibilities!’
