GREAT COMBINATION: TINKERING & LEADERSHIP
‘The period I worked at Allseas as an Engineer was a great time for me. Okay, it wasn’t actual sailing like in the merchant marine. But the tinkering on the job more than made up for that.’ We interviewed Jochem van der Stap. After all the sailing, he was looking for a job on shore. How do you manage someone’s expectations? After the mediation process at TOS, he now works as Foreman Propulsion Workshop. TINKERING & LEADERSHIP
MAINTAINING MAIN ENGINES
‘Ahh, I just love the tinkering with machinery. At the Solitaire at Allseas, there was always something to be done and we did the major maintenance work, on the main engines for example, ourselves. Spare parts and tools were always available on board. Together with the team of engineers on board, we had a world of experience for taking on large projects. What more could you ask for? Still, eventually I chose to make the switch to work on shore. However, my first shore position wasn’t what I had expected.
That’s when I contacted TOS. I think every seafarer knows about TOS and what they do. And TOS Sea2Shore is a well-known part of TOS. A former colleague of mine also found an interesting job on shore with the help of this program. So, this time, I had great expectations .’
GREAT COMBINATION: FOREMAN PROPULSION WORKSHOP
‘During my introductory meeting, the people at TOS listened closely and asked good questions. I was already clear about my preferences after the experience of my first job on shore. Once I had an interview with a client, TOS made sure that I was well-prepared. Via a slight detour, we finally decided on the position of Foreman Propulsion Workshop at Wärtsilä. The job offers a great combination of tinkering, leadership and responsibility.
SEA2SHORE: FORMER SEAFARER
And my experience as a seafarer still comes in handy every day. On board you learn to think in terms of solutions and to be creative. You have to! The parts you need are not always available. You also learn to work well together on board. As Foreman, I really benefit from this.
At Wärtsilä people really listen to what I have to say, and I can tinker regularly.
I feel right at home here!’
