‘I worked at sea for nearly eight years. In 2015, I worked and lived in China for three months to guide the completion of two heavy-lift vessels. This period, as well as sailing along the Northern Sea Route on the Polar Class heavy-lift vessels, made a tremendous impression on me. The success we booked as a team is something I’ll never forget.’ Meet Rick de Hond, currently working as an ILS Engineer* at Damen Naval. ‘As an ILS Engineer, I am involved from the beginning of the shipbuilding process. It’s very interesting to compare my work now with the period in 2015 when I worked at a shipyard in China,’ says Rick.
position: ILS Engineer
‘At the beginning of the year the project for which we were hired was completed faster than initially expected. As a result, there was little work for the heavy-lift vessels at that time. This was one of the reasons for me to have a look at other options. Since there were not a lot of onshore jobs for my background & work experience at the time, I contacted TOS. After all, crewing agencies have more connections within the onshore market. That way, I could keep the search area as wide as possible. Jolie Seleba, recruiter at TOS, selected the position of ILS Engineer for me. It’s a really interesting move in my career. It fits my profile and my desire to stay involved with shipping. I contribute to the construction of new vessels before a ship is first launched into the water. It’s fun to be able to tell from my own experience how seafarers handle certain systems/programs.’
Sea2Shore job
‘For any seafarers who are also considering making the move to onshore, take a good look at the strengths you have to offer. How did you perform on board? Use this knowledge to find a position that suits you! In the position of ILS Engineer, I’m able to develop myself further in a broader sense in the world of shipping. TOS helped me to take the next step forward in my career.’
*) ILS Engineer: In charge of processing maintenance data within a set timeframe and budget, according to the quality standards. ILS data is used to analyse maintenance, including Reliability Availability and Maintainability Analysis (RAM), or Life Cycle Costs calculations (LCC). The results form the backbone for the variety of services that will be implemented (e.g. training, supply support, technical documentation).
