A CAPTAIN AMONG SEA LIONS
He can’t imagine a life not out on the water. He officially retired in 2003. Yet, fourteen years later, he is still going strong at the helm of De Nieuwe Prins (The New Prince). The 71-year-old captain, Cor Boekelman, sails the Fast Ferry of the RET between Hook of Holland and the second Maasvlakte.
We didn’t need navigational equipment to find this clear match. ‘I have worked my entire career in inland shipping in Rotterdam’, the captain tells us. ‘I witnessed the digging up of the entire Europoort.’ Smiling, he continues: ‘I can always smell exactly where I am on the water!’
CALL OF THE WATER
Tugs, radar boats. From AB Inland Shipping to captain. Cor worked with the Eendracht rowers for 40 years, mooring the ships. Even after that, the water continued to call to him. ‘Together with retired volunteers, we sometimes help with the mooring of smaller boats. Since I’ve always kept my paperwork well-organised, I was able to apply to TOS. Something I can absolutely recommend to others who are (or are nearly) retired. The relationship is good and the explanation always clear’, Cor tells us to describe his experiences with TOS. ‘And I love this position with the RET. When I began in 1970, it reeked of ammoniac, but nowadays the water of the Europoort is very clean. When we sail to the Maasvlakte, we even see sea lions there. Isn’t that just grand?’
‘JUST ONE PHONE CALL AND EVERYTHING IS ARRANGED’
Koenraad Slooter, shipping company management at Danser Shipping
Koenraad Slooter grew up at the Haringvliet. From a very young age he was fascinated by water and ships. After studying port management, doing internships at freight companies, ship brokers, stevedores, shipping companies, a container terminal operator and an international freight forwarder in Rotterdam, he ultimately started working for Danser Shipping in Switzerland.
His work has revolved around inland container shipping for 25 years. “It is an exciting and challenging sector,” says Koenraad, “especially because of the contact with companies along the Rhine and the multi-national crew on board our vessels.” Koenraad works with TOS to find crew for the ships that ply between Basel and Antwerp/Rotterdam. “They know the regulations and know exactly what qualifications people need.”
“If you need crew quickly, for example to cover someone who is ill, you only need to make one telephone call to TOS and it is arranged. We waste no time and TOS knows exactly what kind of people we need and the kind of people who fit in our company. It’s not surprising that we regularly offer the people they send to us a job.”
And how does Koenraad experience the collaboration in general? “Helpful, decent and friendly.” In answer to the question whether he would recommend TOS to others, he answers immediately. “Of course! It is a very pleasant partnership.”
THE NETHERLANDS – CZECH REPUBLIC: A GOLDEN COMBINATION
From the time they were born, they were both already aboard a ship. With family and friends in the industry, it was no surprise when they began their career in inland shipping. Siebelina Ooms – Senior Consultant Maritime the Netherlands – and Rudolf Zak – Branch Manager Czech Republic – tell us about their collaboration and the role that TOS plays in inland shipping.
Rudolf worked for over fourteen years as AB Inland Shipping and shipmate on an inland shipping vessel and also Siebelina feels perfectly at home in this sector. Although they have different nationalities, they certainly speak the same language: the language of inland shipping. They know like no other the needs of the client and how to best meet those needs. Siebelina and Rudolf have been working together intensively for nine years already. They speak on a daily basis. ‘And we usually Skype once a week to discuss all the things that are going on’, explains Rudolf. ‘Besides that, we meet up ‘live’ three or four times a year. The collaboration runs very smoothly!’
THE STRENGTH OF TOS
TOS takes care of placement for positions such as AB inland shipping, shipmates, captains with Rhine patent and chief engineers. ‘People with different nationalities and backgrounds’, describes Siebelina. ‘Now that the market is getting stronger, the demand for personnel is also growing.’ Rudolf adds: ‘That is why we don’t only recruit in the Czech Republic, but also look for crew members in Poland, Romania, Bulgaria and other Eastern European countries. And this approach has paid off with good people. That is our strength: our familiarity with the world of inland shipping!’
A GOOD MATCH
Marten van Waardenberg, captain/owner ms Barend
Last year, they celebrated their ’10-year anniversary’ at TOS. Marten van Waardenberg has worked with TOS since taking over the company from his parents. How does he experience the partnership? Marten has worked on the ms Barend from the time he was 19 years old. In 2006, he became captain/owner of the ship that his parents had built. The world of inland shipping is home to him. And TOS makes sure he has extra hands on deck. ‘We usually have two boys on board with us, alternating their shifts. One is here with us for a few weeks, and then the other for another few weeks.’
FRIENDLY FAMILY BUSINESS
TOS is always looking for people that are a match with the captains. ‘And vice versa. For example, there was a young AB inland shipping that had always sailed with his father. This was his first job on his own. TOS placed him with us because they knew that he would be welcomed into a friendly family business. You can’t just throw a boy like that in the deep end’, tells Marten. With a good match like that, everyone is happy!’
EVERYTHING IS TAKEN CARE OF
Marten is also very positive about TOS when it comes to sick leave: ‘You don’t have to worry about a thing. No double costs or pricy insurances. When someone suddenly falls ill for a longer period of time, TOS makes sure there is a replacement and takes care of everything. My colleagues often ask me about my experience with TOS. I can recommend TOS to everyone!’
