‘I sailed for about four years. What I remember most are the long ocean voyages, the adventure, the view of the sea, the whales and dolphins and the time spent with the crew. The time together on board was very special, but so were the meetings on shore.’ We interviewed Piet van Zeijl about his experience with Sea2Shore mediation by TOS. He has left the turbulent waters behind him and now works as a Marine Surveyor.
‘I worked for a while as a seafarer for Anthony Veder and Kustvaart Harlingen (Coastal Shipping Harlingen). They were good times, but I felt I needed a greater challenge and more depth in the technical side of the job. During my time at STC in Rotterdam, I had already heard about TOS. In my years of sailing, I hadn’t really considered TOS until I find out that TOS also mediates for shore-based jobs. I contacted TOS and we discussed all of the possibilities for me with a Sea2Shore career switch in a personal interview. They gave a clear indication of what I can expect and how to be well-prepared for the job interviews. These interviews are quite different than for a sailing position with a shipping company. The best advice: just be yourself!’
added value AS A SEAFARER
‘It is good to realise the areas you have added value as a former seafarer. We are especially good at finding solutions and we work well independently. Great qualities, right? TOS talks with you about who you are, what skills you have and how you see your career. You also discuss the possibilities on shore for each company and position. This means that you are very well-prepared for the interview. Now, I work as Marine Surveyor at Artium Experts. I assess different kinds of damage to, for example, vessels. A new challenge with many new opportunities and I am learning so much!’
