Plan for shipyard school
thursday 25 Feb 2010
A local shipbuilder will soon start a skills training school at its premises on Chain Ferry Road in Butterworth, Pe-nang, in a joint project with a United States-based ship building company. The students will receive their training at the Nautica Nova Ship-building & Engineering Sdn Bhd under its joint venture with Off-shore Energy Holding (OEH).

Nautica Nova director Gerald Gesman said the students would be trained in welding, piping and other trades related to shipyard and, upon completion of the certificate course, could be absorbed into the company as foremen, supervisors and other related employment.

“We are targeting students aged 17 or 18. They do not have to go abroad for the training. “The course period will span between 60 and 90 days,” Gerald told a press conference after witnessing the launching of The Hull A0271 Lightering Support Vessel (AET Voyager) at Nautica Nova’s premises recently.

Also present were Nautica Nova managing director Chuah Chuan Yong, Seberang Jaya assemblyman Datuk Arif Shah Omar Shah and his wife Datin Latifah Asmawi.

Gesman, who is also OEH chief executive officer, said the two companies planned to expand the school into an academy with an investment of US$5mil (RM17.14mil). He said construction work on the academy was expected to start in a year.
